A Simple Way to Support Our Community
posted on Monday, December 16, 2024 in Communications
“Every purchase from a local shop, restaurant, or service helps strengthen our regional economy and supports the hardworking business owners and employees right here in the Cedar Valley. Let’s make this holiday season brighter for everyone by choosing local, not just now, but every day throughout the year.” - Katy Susong, President and CEO of Grow Cedar Valley
We’ve all heard the phrase “shop local,” but how often do we really think about what it means for the Cedar Valley? In today’s fast-paced world, shopping from the comfort of your sofa or desk chair has become second nature, yet it’s the businesses in our community that bring life, opportunity and connection to the area.
Every Dollar Makes a Difference
Supporting the local economy starts with shopping at locally owned businesses. A significant portion of every dollar spent stays in the Cedar Valley, creating jobs, supporting local organizations and helping to create a cycle that benefits everyone.
Jessica Rucker, Executive Director of Main Street Waterloo, explains “Supporting local isn't just something to think about during the holidays – it's something we should all prioritize year-round. These are your friends, your neighbors, and your family. They're the ones donating to little league teams, sponsoring local fundraisers, and giving back to our community in countless ways. When you spend local, you're keeping more than 60% of the money right here at home, helping to strengthen our local economy and build a better Waterloo for everyone.”
This impact is often referred to as the local multiplier effect. Studies from Civic Economics show that when you spend $100 at a locally owned business, an average of $68 stays in the community, compared to only $43 when shopping at a non-local business.
That money is then reinvested back into the community through local taxes and partnerships. Sales taxes support road maintenance, public safety, and community facilities, while property taxes help fund schools, parks, and infrastructure projects. Many local businesses also work with nearby suppliers and service providers, keeping resources and opportunities close to home.
The Personal Connection of Shopping Local
Walk into a local shop or family-owned restaurant and you’ll notice the care and attention that go into the experience. Business owners and employees know their customers and take pride in what they provide. Kim Bear, Executive Director of Community Main Street Cedar Falls, says “These businesses are run by the ones who know our names, and make every season a little brighter. When you shop local, it’s about showing gratitude to the heart of our community, and building a stronger, brighter Cedar Falls we can all be proud of.”
The Cedar Valley’s character shines through its locally owned businesses. Whether it’s handmade goods, carefully sourced products or unique services, there’s always something worth exploring. And let’s not forget that shopping local can be an experience of its own! Grab a group of friends, spend a day exploring, pop into local shops and enjoy a bite or drink along the way. It’s a great way to spend time together and appreciate what our local businesses bring to the community.
A Stronger Cedar Valley Starts With You
Shopping local is a straightforward, simple way to strengthen the Cedar Valley. Every purchase circulates money in the community, supports local jobs and contributes to the success of people who work hard to make this area a great place to live.
The next time you’re out, stop by a local boutique, visit a family-owned restaurant or explore the businesses that make up the Cedar Valley. Your support goes a long way in building a community we can all be proud to call home.
