The 91st General Assembly Now In Session

posted on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 in Government Affairs

The 91st General Assembly of the Iowa Legislature began earlier this week, kicking off the 2025 session. Lawmakers are tentatively set to adjourn on May 2, coinciding with the expiration of per diem expenses.

The first week primarily focuses on tradition and formalities. Newly elected members took their oaths of office, party leaders delivered opening remarks, and Governor Kim Reynolds presented the Condition of the State Address.

In her address, the Governor proposed creating Iowa’s own Department of Government Efficiency, reducing the use of cell phones in K-12 schools and while driving, and reforming Iowa’s unemployment system. Governor Reynolds highlighted focusing on math proficiency for K-12 and providing teachers with professional development and training for math curriculum. Healthcare and energy were also large parts of her speech.

Receptions this week and throughout the month will provide opportunities for legislators and advocates to connect and begin discussing priorities for the months ahead.
